Standout Australian industry and government projects and solutions using the Internet of Things (IoT) have been recognised as winners of the 2023 IoT Awards in Sydney yesterday evening.

The awards, the official awards of Australia’s peak industry body for Internet of Things (IoT), IoT Alliance Australia, provided a snapshot of how IoT is being used to advance management of Australian energy and water networks, operational efficiency in multiple industries, modernise government services, among many other uses.

The awards were sponsored by Akkodis, IoT Skills Australia, KORE, KPMG, nbn and SUEZ.

There were judged by a panel of judges from across Australian industry and academia. They assessed how entrants had used IoT to run their operations and deliver services more efficiently, how they had innovated using IoT, how they had dealt with interoperability and security challenges, and how they had used IoT for good, and about the impact of these projects.

Winners worked to deploy thousands of meters and sensors across a water distribution network to improve management of water and utility operations, and worked to reduce the cost of remote metering of energy by extending the life of energy meters.

Winners were also responsible for a lifesaving digital healthcare project, provision of real-time data to councils to aid traffic management, manufacturing of 3D body scanners, and advanced monitoring of food refrigeration to help a major fast-food retailer reduce food waste.

The awards were presented at the end of the 2023 IoT Impact conference. See photos of IoT Impact 2023.

The 2023 IoT Awards Winners

  • Smart Places & Infrastructure Award 2023, sponsored by nbn
The Digital Utility at Scale project, nominated by South East Water, deployed thousands of meters and sensors in Victoria and alerted thousands of customers to potential leaks, saving them an estimated $1.28 million dollars.

  • Food & Agriculture Award 2023, sponsored by KPMG
The Farmdeck: Monitoring Fridge Sensors pilot project nominated by Outcomex overcame physical connectivity challenges to help McDonalds in Australia react quickly to fridge temperature changes, to avoid food waste and expenses.

  • Water Award 2023, sponsored by SUEZ
Awarded to the Non-Urban Water Meter Monitoring solution from SigSense and Kallipr. This dual-antenna solution for WaterNSW was designed to provide a reliable, secure connection for water consumption logging, where other devices were unable.

  • Energy Award 2023, sponsored by IoT Skills Australia
The Meter Data Logger Program, nominated by Telstra, enabled Jemena to extend the life of legacy, analogue metering assets for tens of thousands of customers in high rise buildings, while enabling remote meter reads.

  • Research Award 2023, sponsored by KORE
This project, nominated by Western Sydney University, uses machine learning modules tied to 202 micro-locations to learn what optimal soil moisture is for each, and how weather and irrigation events will alter soil moisture against additional contexts.

  • Health Award 2023, sponsored by Akkodis
Heart of the Nation project, nominated by Inauro, is charity seeking to provide a publicly accessible, central repository of data about Automated Electric Defibrillators in Australia, including to help track their use.

  • Manufacturing Award 2023
Bodd – 3D Body Scanners from Bodd Technologies, are manufactured in Australia in partnership with Bosch. The AWS-connected scanners use high fidelity scans taking less than a minute to fit a person for an entire product catalogue of clothing, saving time for uniform fitting and potentially reducing waste for retailers.

  • Construction Award 2023
The KelTech IoT Label On A Cable, from Keltech IoE, uses encrypted NFC tags to provide online, real-time visibility of deployed IoT assets, such as switches and cables. It is in use in projects around the world.

  • Transport Award 2023
TransportDeck: Pick-Up and Drop-Off Bays within NSW, nominated by Outcomex, provides Councils with real-time data about the number and nature of pedestrian and vehicle movements to improve traffic flow and decrease wait times

  • Security Award 2023
The Meter Data Logger Program, was developed by Telstra and Jemena to meet comprehensive critical infrastructure requirements and customer privacy considerations. This ranges from ISO27001 certification for selected IP network products and international operations and services, to regular independent audits. Both companies have teams, processes and systems to monitor for and manage security incidents.

  • Interoperability Award 2023
The Digital Utility at Scale project, nominated by South East Water, includes systems and devices that can communicate across multiple telecommunication networks, use open standard protocols such as NB-IoT and LightweightM2M for carriage and data transactions and report to a multitude of head-end systems.

  • IoT For Good Award 2023
The Smart Parks Can Cool Our Cities project, nominated by Western Sydney University, was the subject of a cost benefit analysis commissioned by the NSW Government  which attested to improved well-being via increased park visitation, and several Principles of Governance, including ethical behaviour and governing purpose. The expected water saving will help in establishing more green spaces, and new IP from the project will be open-source.

Congratulations to all 2023 IoT Awards finalists and thank you to all entrants for sharing their achievements with the judges.
