A CSIRO-developed embedded intelligence platform and a low cost "urban insights system" are among the finalists in the Smart Sensing category of the 2024 Australian IoT Awards.

The awards are the official awards program of IoT Alliance Australia, Australia’s peak industry body for Internet of Things (IoT), and IoT Hub.

The entries provide a snapshot of how IoT is being used to advance productivity, security and sustainability across Australian industry and government, from water and energy to manufacturing and government services.

Winners of IoT Awards categories will be announced over networking drinks and canapes at the culmination of the 2024 IoT Impact conference on June 13 at UTS in Sydney.

In its fifth year, the IoT Impact conference and exhibition will explore, debate and uncover how Australia organisations can achieve sustainability goals, achieve trust and implement IoT technologies to create a data smart Australia. Purchase tickets and see the IoT Impact Conference agenda here.

The Smart Sensing Award finalists:

Embedded Intelligence Platform by CSIRO Data61’s Cognitag team

The Embedded Intelligence Platform (EIP), from the CSIRO’s Cognitag team, is designed to enable dynamic sensing, collection and transmission of data over multiple communications stacks, with compact, secure and energy efficient protocols to and from the cloud, and to enable edge computing.

Development of EIP started in 2020 and Cognitag's collaboration with such clients as Ceres Tag and Lodi Enabled came to fruition in the 2022-23 financial year, showing EIP's use in agricultural, transport and logistics, pet health and smart site applications.

For example, Cognitag enable Ceres Ear tags to run a machine learning model continuously over 50Hz accelerometer data to generate cattle behaviour metrics such as how much the animal has grazed, drank, ruminated or moved, and compress this into a packet which is sent directly from the cattle ear to low earth orbit satellite.

Secure Agility's AI IoT transportation solution

The solution is intended to optimise taxi services and cycleway use, improve taxi rank safety and reduce travel and wait times for commuters and cyclists.

The year 2023 marked the full deployment of Secure Agility’s 'Taxi Ranks' solution set in the designated locations and the transition to production for the 'Cycleways' solution set.

These solution sets operate on a bespoke edge application, incorporating edge computing, computer vision, and a workflow engine, and integrate with Transport for NSW's Open Data Hub.

SAPHI’s dynamic visual sensing technology for government

Shellshock is an “urban insights system” designed to capture multiple data sources but not personal or identifiable data. It is designed for local governments and transport authorities grappling with complex urban data collection.

Shellshock is intended to replace an array of devices that require large-scale, costly deployments and extensive management.

It consolidates these functionalities into a single, edge computing sensor, and is designed to offer a cost-effective, secure and efficient alternative, while being “cheaper than a road rope counter”.

Ceres Tag Pasture Feed Intake Algorithm

Touted as a world first commercial product for free-ranging grazing livestock, this algorithm is designed to improve the precision of nutritional and other management strategies and speed up the rate of genetic gain for feed efficiency in grazing cattle.

The algorithm was developed and refined by the CSIRO on its eGrazor Collar, in partnership with the NSW Department of Primary Industries over the last 15 years.

During the 2022- 23 financial year, the algorithm was converted from running on a collar to running on the Ceres Tag livestock ear tag, enabling automatically transmission of data about daily pasture feed intake and methane output.

Thank you to all entrants

If your entry isn’t a finalist, that does not mean the judges thought it was without merit. Separating the nominations was not always straightforward. Thank you for giving the judges the opportunity to learn more about your achievements.

A special thank you to the award judges who brought valuable knowledge in key domains to the judging process.

We also thank IoT Skills Australia for making the 2024 IoT Awards possible though their sponsorship.

The IoT Impact conference will be held in Sydney on 13 June, 2024, at the Great Hall, UTS. Purchase tickets and see the IoT Impact Conference agenda.
