SAP Australia, Sydney’s Northern Beaches Council and Curl Curl Lagoon Friends have built and deployed an IoT-laden raft to measure water quality in the lagoon ecosystem.

The raft, which is called Newton, uses SAP Leonardo sensing technology and 3G connectivity to transmit water quality measurements to the SAP cloud every half hour.

It was launched into Curl Curl Lagoon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches at the end of last month.

Curl Curl Lagoon Friends said in a Facebook post that it had worked with the local council’s Natural Environment Unit to understand “what’s both useful and possible to monitor in the lagoon.”

“By measuring salinity, pH (acidity), and conductivity, we can capture simple real-time data on water quality,” the group said.

“We hope to begin to understand when the conditions are best for supporting biodiversity in the lagoon.”
