Sony is gunning for a larger slice of the IoT market with a US$212 million ($300 million) buyout of Israeli chipmaker Altair Semiconductor.

Altair makes low-power LTE chips and software that are not only expected to be used in mobile phones but also in IoT devices.

“Sony aims to not only expand Altair's existing business, but also to move forward with research on and development of new sensing technologies,” the Japanese firm said in a statement.

“With the markets for wearable and IoT devices expected to continue to expand, Sony aims to deliver component devices that feature both sensing and communication capabilities, as well as new LTE solutions that leverage the strengths of these component devices.”
