Entries for IoT Hub’s 2018 Australian IoT Awards are still open, but they are closing soon – on Monday 7 May.

This year’s awards are being staged in conjunction with the IoT Festival and will be announced at the close of the festival in Melbourne on 4 June.

The awards will include a variety of categories that reflect the industries being transformed by IoT, ranging from smart cities to healthcare.

The 2018 awards build on the success of IoT Hub's inaugural Australian IoT Awards last year, where the winners were:

  • The Yield for its Sensing+ for Aquaculture solution
  • Safety Ammo for its Smart Pinning Station
  • The Australian National University for its Campus Water Monitoring System by WaterGroup
  • Waverley Municipal Council for Bondi’s new smart bins by Solar Bins
  • Endeavour Veterinary Ecology for the K-Tracker Koala Telemetry System by LX Group.

The Yield’s Sensing+ solution was crowned Australia’s IoT Project of the Year, narrowly beating Endeavour Veterinary Ecology’s K-Tracker system.

The Yield’s marketing and communications manager, Kate White, said participating in the 2017 IoT Hub Awards had been a fantastic opportunity for The Yield to line up against the best and brightest IoT innovators in Australia. “It was an honour to take home two awards, amidst such robust competition,” she said.

Endeavour director John Hanger said winning the 2017 Education and Research category had been very gratifying. “It gave our innovative K-Trackers (koala tracking devices) recognition and exposure, which in turn has helped to drive further refinement and development, ultimately improving our efforts to protect and conserve koalas,” he said.

Silke Stolze, director of operations at Solar Bins – which supplied the smart bins to Waverley Council – said the award had catapulted Solar Bins Australia to leaders in the smart waste field.

Rian Sullings, manager smart metering and IoT at WaterGroup, said the award had led to increased recognition and interest in the company’s smart water metering and IoT solutions. “It has been a great honour to be recognised, along with our client Australian National University, for our achievements in water management and IoT,” he said.

ANZ’s largest IoT event

Thomas Alomes, General Manager of the IoT Festival organiser, Vumero Institute, said that as the largest IoT event in Australia and New Zealand, the IoT Festival was the natural home for the Australian IoT Awards.

“The IoT Festival brings together a significant cross-section of business, government and academia to learn and network with leading local and international industry experts,” he said. “It’s a celebration of the possibilities, technologies and innovation in the future of the Internet of Things.”

Applications for the 2018 Australian IoT Awards will open on 5 March and close on 7 May. The finalists will be announced on 10 May.

The winners will then be selected by a panel of judges and will be announced on 4 June at the close of the IoT Festival, which is being held at the Melbourne Park Function Centre.
