Samsung will make its entire smart TV line-up in 2016 “IoT ready” with “hub technology” it developed jointly with SmartThings.

The 2016 SUHD TVs will be shown off at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The TVs will contain a SmartThings app that lets the user control other SmartThings-enabled devices in the home.

Users must also plug a free USB adapter into the TV “to monitor and control ZigBee and Z-Wave devices”.

SmartThings promised to make more smart home-related announcements during CES, which runs January 6-9 in Las Vegas.

Samsung’s visual display business president Hyun Suk Kim said Samsung is “the first company to launch IoT-ready TVs.”

Kim outlined a number of possible applications, including in home security.

“For example, with an outdoor camera connected to their Samsung Smart TV, customers can check when visitors arrive and choose to open their front door, directly from their sofa,” Kim said.

“Motion sensor alerts can also pop-up directly on the TV screen, if movement outside the home is picked up, providing more security and peace of mind, whether at home or away.”
